Our Story

Rooted in tradition, built for San Diego.

A professional African hair braiding salon on Balboa Ave, open around the clock, staffed by a team trained to one standard.

Long before the shop opened its doors, founder Awa spent close to two decades training in West African braiding technique — learning the precise, tension-aware sectioning that keeps a style looking sharp for weeks rather than days.

In 2020 she brought that training to San Diego and opened Awa Hair Braiding with a straightforward mission: combine authentic technique with efficient, team-based service, so clients get real craftsmanship without spending an entire day in a chair. It sounds simple, but it is genuinely rare in an industry where speed and skill are usually treated as opposites.

Today that mission has grown into a roster of more than 20 expert braiders working side by side, welcoming women, men, kids and military families into a shop that feels as good as the styles look.

What We Stand For

The values behind every style.

Authentic technique

West African braiding methods, taught and practised with real training behind every style rather than a trend copied from social media.

Speed without shortcuts

A team-based system built so your time matters as much as your hair does — without ever rushing the technique itself.

Consistent, team-based care

Every braider trains to the same standard, so the quality of your style never depends on which pair of hands you happen to get.

Welcoming to everyone

Women, men, kids and military personnel all find a seat at Awa — every chair, every hour, every day.

Fair, accessible pricing

Quality braiding should not be reserved for special occasions. We keep pricing honest so it fits a regular routine.

Tension-aware from the root

Protecting your edges is not an afterthought. It is the first thing every braider here is trained to get right.

Training Standards

Why every braider trains the same way.

New braiders at Awa do not simply shadow a stylist and pick up habits secondhand. Everyone trains against the same tension-aware, section-first standard Awa built the salon on, which is how the shop keeps quality consistent whether it is your first visit or your fifth.

That consistency is also what makes the team-based model work at all — multiple braiders can work on one install together because everyone approaches the style the same way.

24h
Consistent standards, any hour

Whether you book at 9am or 2am, the technique, training and care are identical.

I have been to a lot of braiders in San Diego and nobody comes close. Three people worked on my knotless braids at once and I was out in a fraction of the time I expected. The parts are perfect.

Came in at 11pm after my shift because they are actually open 24 hours. Clean cornrows, sharp lines, no waiting around. This is now my regular spot.

My daughter is six and normally hates getting her hair done. They were so patient with her and let her pick her own beads. She has not stopped looking in the mirror since.

Awa knows what she is doing. You can tell straight away this is real West African technique, not something learned off social media. My edges have never looked better after braids.

Booked boho braids from a photo and they matched it exactly. The curls were placed so well and it lasted a full seven weeks. Worth every penny.

They maintain my locs every six weeks and have never once over-tightened them. After years of retwists that thinned my roots this has been a genuine relief.

Drove up from Chula Vista with my two sisters and all three of us were braided at the same time. That never happens anywhere else. We will absolutely be back.

Fair prices, no upselling, and they told me honestly which size would actually suit my hair instead of just taking the bigger booking. Really refreshing.

Military schedule means I can never book anything normal. Being able to walk in at 5am before a deployment and get my braids sorted is unbeatable.
