Home / About Us
A professional African hair braiding salon on Balboa Ave, open around the clock, staffed by a team trained to one standard.
Long before the shop opened its doors, founder Awa spent close to two decades training in West African braiding technique — learning the precise, tension-aware sectioning that keeps a style looking sharp for weeks rather than days.
In 2020 she brought that training to San Diego and opened Awa Hair Braiding with a straightforward mission: combine authentic technique with efficient, team-based service, so clients get real craftsmanship without spending an entire day in a chair. It sounds simple, but it is genuinely rare in an industry where speed and skill are usually treated as opposites.
Today that mission has grown into a roster of more than 20 expert braiders working side by side, welcoming women, men, kids and military families into a shop that feels as good as the styles look.
Nearly two decades of West African braiding practice, refining the tension-aware method the salon still runs on today.
The salon launches with a clear mission: authentic technique delivered through efficient, team-based service.
Word spreads across San Diego County as clients discover a genuine alternative to the single-stylist salon visit.
Open around the clock for women, men, kids and military families, with the same standards Awa started with.
Every member of the team trains to the same standard, so your style is consistent no matter who takes your chair.

Founder and master braider, West African trained with nearly two decades of experience.

Twenty-plus braiders working side by side, day and night, all trained to one standard.

Patient, gentle styling for kids braiding and men's braiding appointments.
West African braiding methods, taught and practised with real training behind every style rather than a trend copied from social media.
A team-based system built so your time matters as much as your hair does — without ever rushing the technique itself.
Every braider trains to the same standard, so the quality of your style never depends on which pair of hands you happen to get.
Women, men, kids and military personnel all find a seat at Awa — every chair, every hour, every day.
Quality braiding should not be reserved for special occasions. We keep pricing honest so it fits a regular routine.
Protecting your edges is not an afterthought. It is the first thing every braider here is trained to get right.
New braiders at Awa do not simply shadow a stylist and pick up habits secondhand. Everyone trains against the same tension-aware, section-first standard Awa built the salon on, which is how the shop keeps quality consistent whether it is your first visit or your fifth.
That consistency is also what makes the team-based model work at all — multiple braiders can work on one install together because everyone approaches the style the same way.
Whether you book at 9am or 2am, the technique, training and care are identical.
Book your first appointment, or ask us a question first — both are free.
