Tension-free at the root and natural-looking from day one. Our knotless technique protects your edges while a 20-braider team gets you out of the chair far faster than a traditional single-stylist visit.

Knotless braids are a protective style that begins with your own natural hair at the root, feeding extensions in gradually as the braid is built rather than anchoring each braid with a tight starting knot. The result lays flatter, feels lighter, and puts far less tension on your hairline from the very first day. For anyone who has dealt with sore edges or a tender scalp after a traditional install, it is usually the first style we recommend.
At Awa Hair Braiding, every knotless install is handled by our team-based braiding staff on Balboa Ave. Rather than one stylist working alone for hours, several trained braiders section, part and braid together — which is how we offer full knotless installs in any size without asking clients to block out an entire day. Appointments run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so you can book around work, school or family rather than the other way around.
Starting with your natural hair rather than a knot means dramatically less pull at the hairline, which is why knotless is the safest choice for fine or previously stressed edges.
No tight, tender first week. You can tie the style up, sleep on it and go about your day immediately after leaving the chair.
The gradual feed-in makes the base of each braid sit flush against the scalp, so parts read clean and the style looks like it grew that way.
Jumbo, large, medium and small — each with a different balance of install time, longevity and detail. Your braider will help you choose.
Multiple trained hands work your install together, which is how a full head of knotless braids finishes in a fraction of the usual time.
From fine and fragile to thick and coarse, the technique adapts to what your hair actually needs rather than forcing one approach.
There is no single right size. It comes down to how much time you want to spend in the chair, how long you want the style to last, and the look you are after.
| Size | Look and feel | Install time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jumbo | Bold, chunky, statement braids | Quickest of the four | First-time braid clients |
| Large | Relaxed, everyday movement | Fast, comfortable middle ground | Low-maintenance styling |
| Medium | Balanced detail and volume | Moderate — most requested | Updos and half-up styles |
| Small | Fine, precise, longer-wearing | Longest of the four | Maximum longevity |
Every size is quoted personally at booking — ask your braider for a recommendation based on your hair and schedule.

A light, hydrating scalp oil two to three times a week keeps both your natural hair and the braids looking fresh without weighing them down. Wrapping with a satin scarf or bonnet at night cuts down on frizz and friction considerably. Wash every one to two weeks with a diluted, sulfate-free shampoo focused on the scalp rather than scrubbing the length of the braid.

The knotless technique starts with your own hair instead of a tight knot, which means far less tension at the root compared with traditional braiding. Installed properly, it is one of the gentlest protective styles available.
Most clients maintain knotless braids for around six to eight weeks with proper care, though this varies by hair type and the size you choose. Smaller sizes generally last longer.
