Braiding children’s hair is a different discipline from braiding adults. A child’s hairline is finer and more vulnerable, their scalp is more sensitive, and their patience for sitting still is finite. Every one of those facts has to shape how the appointment runs.
Our San Diego braiders work with noticeably lighter tension on kids, size the braids appropriately for a smaller head, and pace the appointment around the child rather than the clock. Because we work as a team, a style that would take one stylist hours is finished far sooner — which for a restless six-year-old is the single most valuable thing we offer. Beads, cuffs and colourful accessories are always welcome.

A satin bonnet or pillowcase makes an enormous difference to how long a child’s style lasts. Oil the scalp lightly twice a week, avoid pulling the style into tight ponytails on top of the braids, and book a takedown on time rather than stretching it — children’s hair grows quickly and styles loosen sooner.

We braid for children of all ages. For very young children, shorter and simpler styles usually work best.
It should not. Our braiders use deliberately light tension on children and pace the appointment around them. Tell us immediately if your child says anything feels tight.
