Sharp, close-to-scalp rows braided straight back or into fully freestyle patterns. Cornrows are the foundation of African hair braiding, and our braiders treat the parting as carefully as the braid itself.

Cornrows are braided flat against the scalp, each row picking up hair as it travels so the braid sits raised and continuous along a deliberate path. It is the oldest and most technically demanding form of African hair braiding — the tension has to stay even along the entire row, and the parting has to be planned before a single braid begins.
That planning is where the style is won or lost. Straight-back rows demand perfectly parallel parts. Freestyle patterns — curves, zig-zags, hearts, geometric splits — require a braider who can see the finished map before starting. Our San Diego team trains to a single standard on both, which is why cornrow work is consistent no matter which chair you sit in.
Nothing hangs heavy and nothing gets in the way, which makes cornrows ideal for sport, work and hot San Diego weather.

Keep the scalp along each part lightly oiled to stop flaking and itch. Wrap in satin nightly to protect the raised braid line. Cornrows are best refreshed every two to four weeks — leaving them much longer allows new growth to loosen the rows and pull unevenly.

Two to four weeks is typical. Because they sit flat against the scalp, new growth shows sooner than it does with individual braids.
