Box braids are the style most people picture when they think of African hair braiding — individual three-strand braids built from clean, square-sectioned parts, each anchored at the root and carried down the full length. Done well, they are structured, versatile and genuinely long-wearing, which is why they remain the most recognisable protective style in the world.
The part work is what separates a good box braid install from an average one. At our Balboa Ave salon in San Diego, sectioning is treated as a discipline in its own right: every part measured, every row consistent, so the finished style reads sharp from every angle. Our team-based approach means several trained braiders work your install together, keeping the parting standard identical across the whole head.
Square sectioning gives box braids their signature geometry and makes every updo, ponytail and half-up style sit cleanly.
Once installed, box braids need very little daily work — oil the scalp, wrap at night, and go.
Bun, ponytail, half-up, wrapped or down. Few styles give you as many finished looks from one appointment.
With your ends tucked away from daily manipulation and heat, box braids give natural hair a real rest period.
Shoulder-skimming to waist-length, fine to jumbo — we install the full range and advise on what suits your density.
Add ombre lengths, colour packs, cuffs or beads to make the install your own.
From fine, fragile hair to thick, coarse textures — the technique adjusts to what your hair needs.
Choose your style and a time — any hour, any day.
We confirm the look and section your hair cleanly.
Multiple trained hands work together for a faster finish.
Hairline laid, ends neatened, aftercare explained.
Oil your scalp two or three times a week and keep the length lightly moisturised so the braid hair stays soft. Wrap in satin at night. Wash every one to two weeks, focusing shampoo on the scalp and letting the suds rinse down the braids rather than scrubbing them.

Box braids start with a small knot at the root, which gives a very defined base but slightly more tension. Knotless braids feed your natural hair in gradually for a flatter, lighter start. Both wear for six to eight weeks.
A traditional single-stylist install can take most of a day. Because our 20-plus braiders work as a team, box braids finish in a fraction of that time.
